Visit the Netherlands Pavilion: Common Ground at Expo 2025

On 13 April, the next World Expo will commence in Osaka, Japan. The Netherlands will participate with its own circularly constructed pavilion under the theme ‘Common Ground’. The pavilion highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing major global challenges, such as accelerating the energy transition and ensuring the livability of our planet. Over the course of six months, an extensive programme will be held, where Dutch companies, research institutions, and organisations can engage with Japan and strengthen or establish new contacts.

Participation in Expo 2025 presents an opportunity to deepen the bilateral relationship with Japan. As a trusted partner in East Asia and the fourth-largest economy in the world, Japan is of great significance to the Netherlands. This year, we celebrate 425 years of diplomatic relations, which form the foundation for strong cooperation in areas such as (economic) security, trade, agriculture, food security, defence, cyber security, and innovation.

Common Ground

The Dutch participation is inspired by the unique relationship between the Netherlands and water. Our location, partly below sea level, has taught us to collaborate. The Netherlands has been doing this for centuries, including with Japan. For a long time, the Netherlands was the only Western country allowed to trade with Japan, and this relationship led to the theme ‘Common Ground’.

Dutch Innovations

The Netherlands has selected 10 of its most exciting and potentially life-changing innovations for Expo 2025. H2Fuel is one of them. H2Fuel unlocks a revolutionary way to store and release hydrogen using a solid powder. A breakthrough for safe, sustainable and circular energy.

Circular Pavilion

The Dutch pavilion was designed by the architecture firm RAU, engineering firm DGMR, and design studio Tellart, and was constructed by the Japanese contractor Asanuma. The design consists of a rectangular building with a luminous sphere in the centre, symbolising the sun, the energy source for all life on Earth. The exterior features slats shaped like water waves, and the total length of these slats is exactly 425 metres, in honour of the 425-year trade relationship with Japan. The pavilion is also an exemplary model of circular construction. This means all materials are registered, ensuring that we know exactly what we are using and that nothing goes to waste. After the Expo, the pavilion will be dismantled, and the materials will be reused.

Interactive Visitor Experience

Upon arrival at the pavilion, visitors are given a small luminous sphere. This sphere reacts to various installations placed throughout the building, guiding visitors through a journey that explores the history of the Netherlands and Japan, as well as our ongoing struggle against water. The highlight of the experience is when visitors step into the large sphere at the centre of the pavilion, where they will view the world’s first AI-generated film in a 360-degree dome. Finally, visitors can share their own ideas and dreams for the future through an interactive artwork.

Innovating with the Power of Water

Central to the pavilion are ten impressive innovations, all harnessing the power of nature. These innovations are helping to change how we generate energy, travel, and cultivate food.

Business Programming and Public Events

Throughout the six months of the Expo, an extensive programme featuring over 100 events will be held, offering Dutch companies and institutions the opportunity to connect with their Japanese counterparts. Various themed weeks will focus on promising sectors such as energy, food, health, and technology, complemented by a continuous cultural programme featuring works by Dutch artists and ensembles. Six economic missions will be organised from the Netherlands. Visitors will also be invited to attend public events throughout the Expo, including performances and temporary exhibitions by Dutch artists and musicians.

Expo 2025 Osaka will be open from 13 April to 13 October 2025, with participation from approximately 160 countries and organisations. The Expo’s organisers expect to welcome over 28 million visitors.
